Away from the hustle and bustle of Crows Nest lies one of its best hidden gems – Ryo’s

On the constant look out for great ramen, my friend recommended the much hyped noodle house, Ryo’s. Literally a hole in the wall, I felt as if I had been transported to Tokyo. The décor of the restaurant is totally old school, which I love, and the communal tables made it feel quite traditional. Visiting during lunch hour, rookie mistake, the tiny place was jam packed.

My friend and I ordered the fried chicken (chicken karaage), ramen in soy sauce flavoured soup with roast pork, nori, egg and shallots and ramen in spicy hot flavoured soup with roast pork, egg and shallots. Service was quick and our dishes arrived in no time.

First up, the fried chicken. It was perfectly crisp on the outside, juicy on the inside and sizzling hot. There was a feeling of satisfaction every time I heard a ‘crunch’, and it tasted delightfully yummy with the mayonnaise.

Next up, were the two ramen dishes.
The spicy ramen looked spicier than it tasted and the flavours weren’t too strong. Generous with the pork and toppings, the noodles were cooked to a near perfection.

The soy ramen was my favourite dish and probably the reason why I would go back. There was a solid amount of vegetables and pork and the broth had a slight corn taste which made the broth addictive. Once again, the noodles were totally on-point, and it easily made it one of the best cooked noodles I’ve tasted. The broth wasn’t extremely salty that it made you crave water, but it delivered strong flavours minus the saltiness.

Ryo’s is authentic, traditional and should be on the bucket list for all ramen lovers.
Proving that old school is at times, the best way to go, there’s no questioning why Ryo’s is a favourite to many. Just be sure to get there early!
