Serious about coffee and even more serious about their waffles, Haven Tailoring Coffee Joyously, knows the exact recipe for ruining your healthy diet
Most of the places I decide to visit are either recommendations from others or places that catch my eye on my news feed on Instagram. One morning, a glorious photo of the waffles from Haven appeared and like most of you, I drooled at the thought of munching on this delicious treat.
When I arrived, it seemed like I wasn’t the only one that had been dreaming about the waffles. The café was completely packed with eager eaters. From university students, workers, wannabe bloggers (ahem, myself included), the place was alive and buzzing.
My friend ordered the signature pork belly kimcheese burger, I ordered the smashed eggs, pickles & avocado and we decided to share the sexy me egg waffles.
I’m full blood Korean but for some reason whenever I see kimchi (Korean fermented cabbage) mixed in a burger, my heart doesn’t leap for joy but rather does the opposite. Still a little skeptical, I took a bite of the burger and was surprised to find that it was actually quite tasty. The kimchi didn’t stand out like a sore thumb, but rather complimented the pork belly and other ingredients. Usually kimchi is spicy, but the chef was smart enough to not make it super-duper chilli as there was a solid amount of kimchi inside. My friend, Dabs, described the burger as a ‘2 hands job’ and that’s exactly what it was. Prepare yourselves to get a lil’ down and dirty, knowing that it’s all worth it. The pork tender and the kimchi crunchy, this burger was one awesome combo.
The smashed eggs were as expected, delicious. But honestly, how can you go wrong with smashed eggs and avocado? The interesting choice of adding pickles gave the dish an overall slight Asian twist and because I’m a huge fan of pickles, I wasn’t complaining.
In my efforts to quicken my metabolism, I ordered my usual extra hot cappuccino with half sugar (it probably wasn’t the smartest decision to have milk before waffles, but oh well). When ordering coffee, you are the given the option to choose what kind of coffee bean you want, from which particular country and what flavour you want the bean to have. This allows the customer,(you), to tailor your coffee to your preference. Hence the name of the cafe.
Being completely new to this experience, I randomly picked the fruity Ethiopian bean, and oh boy it was fruity. It was a bit too sweet from the sugar and the fruity coffee bean, but other than that, I felt super fancy drinking my tailored made coffee.
A side note, if you’re ordering the waffles be prepared to wait awhile. Everything good comes with patience.. or at least that’s what I’m told.
The sexy me waffles arrived and it looked a little different to the waffles I was normally used too, but it did not disappoint in taste. Sesame being the core ingredient, there was a strong Asian theme to the waffles. My favourite part of the dish was having the black sesame cream mochi combined with a bit of the waffle and then dipping it in the vanilla bean ice-cream. A-maz-ing. The waffles were neither too sweet or boring, and it definitely fixed my sugar craving.
All of the dishes exceeded my expectations and I was even more fascinated over the concept of tailoring your coffee. If you’ve got a sweet tooth and you love waffles, then Haven Tailoring Coffee Joyously is a place you must check out.
I know I’ll be back for that black sesame cream mochi very soon.
